Ladies and Gentlemen, we interrupt our regular broadcast to bring you a special report!
In general I recommend the Rockland-Rockport-Camden-Belfast area if you are visiting Maine and in search of some lovely coastal towns to visit. And considering that I was there in early March and still thought it was a lovely place, I can only imagine how wonderful these areas are in the spring and summer.
Traveling hungry? GOOD! You are going to need that.
When you first get into Rockland, park along Main Street somewhere near the Strand Theatre and take a stroll. End up down where Route 1 turns off of Park Street and merges with Main Street. On the corner you’ll find Park Street Grille. Once inside and seated you may need to ask for a couple extra bowls of salsa to go with your chips (why is there never enough salsa?). There is no need to look at the menu – when the waitress asks for your order, tell her “New England Nachos with pulled pork, please!” Go ahead and get the large order, but I hope you have a friend with you because you won’t be able to finish it by yourself.
Now is the time to sit back, relax, and mentally prepare for the goodness that is about to be delivered to you. And do try to slow down on those chips, you’ll need all the extra space you have.
I warned that you were going to need a big appetite! 😉
But the thing that sealed the deal was when I realized the restaurant had Cholula Hot Sauce! I noticed the stock sitting on the of the shelves behind the servers station and dang near fell out of my chair. When the food came I asked the waitress if I could have some and she brought me a fresh bottle! As in – the plastic was still wrapping the top!! By the time we got done eating I realized I had almost used half a bottle… I felt a little bad, but not enough to stop.
But wait! Theres more.
After you are finally able to walk again, go across the street and back towards the Theatre. On the left hand side is the Rock City Cafe. This place is exactly what a true coffee house should embody! Great drinks served in real mugs, cozy tables, big front window with space for a band, and an … ATTACHED BOOKSTORE! Yup. I knew you’d like it.
